Storm season in OKC: protect your computers from power surges

Oklahoma storms bring lightning and outages. A few inexpensive steps keep your computers and network gear safe.

Reviewed By Nick1 min read

Spring and early summer storms in central Oklahoma often bring lightning, brownouts and short outages. Surges and sudden power loss are common causes of failed power supplies, routers and drives.

Quick wins

  • Use a surge protector (not a plain power strip) for computers, monitors and your router.
  • Put a small UPS (battery backup) on the router and any desktop that must shut down cleanly.
  • Replace surge protectors after a big hit; their protection wears out.
  • Unplug devices during a severe storm if you’re home.

After an outage

  1. Wait for power to be stable before turning devices back on.
  2. Restart the modem first, then the router, then computers.
  3. If something won’t power on or smells hot, unplug it and book a diagnostic.

TipKeep an off-site or cloud backup too. A surge can take out a computer and the backup drive plugged into it at the same time.
