Turn on passkeys for your most important accounts

Passkeys replace passwords with a key that lives on your device. They can’t be phished or reused. Here’s where to start.

Reviewed By Nick1 min read

A passkey is a sign-in key stored on your phone, computer or security key. When you sign in, your device proves it has the key, usually after your fingerprint, face or PIN. There’s no password to steal, guess or type into a fake site.

Start with these accounts

  • Your main email account (it can reset everything else)
  • Your Apple, Google or Microsoft account
  • Banking and payment apps that support passkeys
  • Your password manager

How to add one

  1. Open the account’s security settings.
  2. Look for “Passkeys” or “Sign in with a passkey”.
  3. Choose “Create a passkey” and confirm with your fingerprint, face or PIN.
  4. Add a second passkey on another device, or keep recovery codes somewhere safe.

TipKeep at least one backup way in (a second device or printed recovery codes). Losing your only device shouldn’t lock you out.
